The "mudblood" thing

Well, I think the point of the word is to be derogatory, as it 
specifically calls out a 'defect' (in the minds of the prejudiced) of 
birth - and therefore I don't think there is a polite equivalent.  

Additionally, In PS/SS, Seamus explains his heritage by saying "I'm 
half and half"; in other cases it's discussed by saying that an 
individual had a wizard parent and a non-wizard (Muggle) parent.  But 
the only time a single descriptive term is used is when the word 
'mudblood' comes up.  Which also indicates that there is only one way 
to say 'mudblood,' and thus no polite way to say it.

Ah, no, actually, not true.  "Niger" is pronounced "Ny-jer" - long 'i' 
plus a 'j' sound, not a short 'i' plus a hard 'g' sound.  (Just didn't 
want you making a faux pas in rough company one day....)
