No, I don't think it was, though I may be so ancient I can't 
remember <g> Anyway, I think the straightforward reading is the 
correct one here, although I have a feeling it is Karkaroff who will 
end up being killed. I believe JKR told a live audience (in 
Canada?) that they shouldn't worry too much about Snape 
because, "He's tough." So I think he will last through Book 5 for 
sure. Harry fantasized about Snape being tortured with 
Cruciatus...he's bound to witness that in the books to come. 
Personally, I think Snape will die in Book 7...but only his human 
part. The vampire will, of course, live on. ;-)
