Bugbeak was only one of the innocent lives to be saved.  The others
were Harry's own, Hermione's, Ron's and possibly Snapes -- they all
would've been munched by the Dementors if Time-traveling!Harry hadn't
shown up to conjure a Patronus.  That's my favorite bit -- in order
for Harry and Hermione to survive long enough to go back in time to
rescue themselves, they have to have gone back in time and rescued
themselves.

I think the whole time-travel sequence is one of the most perfectly
structured sequences in all the books.  I just love the way all the
pieces fit together.
