I thought Sirius only knew that Peter was alive when he got the newspaper off 
Fudge that showed the photo of Ron & Scabbers. Before that, he thought Peter 
had killed himself, or gone for good or something. I don't think he really 
knew or believed him to be alive until he saw that paper. 

Even without knowing that Peter was alive he could have left at any time it 
would seem, and I think the only reason he didn't was guilt. He felt 
responsible for the death of two of his best friends, as he was the one that 
persuaded them to change from him to Peter. So he probably thought a life in 
Azkaban was well deserved, and stayed put.
