You had the sentiment exactly, but the quote is: "You fail to 
recognise that it matters not what someone is born, but what they 
grow to be." (page 614, GoF UK -- which explains the missing "z")

I also think this is excellent advice and it seems to me that it 
could be extended to say: "It matters not what high school clique you 
are in, but what you grow to be."
