I'm not sure about the grandfather option either, but I feel certain 
about the significance

Tom Riddle was born c 1927 (see Lexicon for timings). Harry was born 
in 1980 when the Potters were c 22/23 - so they were born c. 1968, 
which makes Riddle certain old enough to be Harry's grandfather - 
although it doesn't mean he is <g>
