I can see where that is a possibility, but what about this:
Almost everything Lupin owns is second hand. Perhaps he received the 
briefcase from his father? After all, we aren't sure of who taught when the 
Marauders were at school, and Lupin's father could have been a professor 
at one time. Just a thought.
