Another possibility is that Quirrell originally tried to rob Flamel's
house, thinking the Stone was there. He wouldn't have found the
Stone, obviously, but he might've found a clue to where it was (a
receipt from Gringott's or something like that). Flamel, coming home
to find his house burgled, would've alerted Dumbledore.
