Based on my experience as a fountain pen enthusiast, I think fountain pens
offer another good analogy. Fountain pen nibs, which are usually made of 12K
or 14K gold in a good pen, gradually yield to the writer's hand and style.
For the owner-writer, the pen works perfectly; when another writer would use
the pen, it is quite likely that the pen will scratch or skip. The end
result is the same: the writer can use the pen to write down words. But the
pen only works perfectly for the owner and not as well for others.
