I only have book one with me right now (Scholastic paperback edition) and at 
the end when Voldemort is trying to get Harry to give him the stone he says "I 
killed your father first, he put up a courageous fight . . . but your mother 
needn't have died. . . she was trying to protect you."

I believe there's something more in Book 3, but I don't have it with me right 
now.  I'll check on it tomorrow.
