Actually both terms have been used in regards to the actual stone in alchemy.  A great many of my science books have it as the "Sorcerer's Stone" while my reference books and websites have it as the "Philosopher's Stone".  I think the word was "Americanized" long before Harry was conceived in Rowling's mind.
