This is actually one of the things I admire most about Hermione.  Of 
all the kids in the school, she's the only one who's consistently 
compassionate, helpful, and totally non-judgemental toward Neville.  
In fact, the first time we see her, when she walks into Harry and 
Ron's compartment on the Hogwarts Express, she's helping Neville 
look for his toad.  She helps him in Potions even when she knows 
it'll get her into trouble with Snape, and when he asks her to the 
Yule Ball (which in itself is a strong indicator that he considers 
her a friend), she turns him down nicely enough that he still has 
the confidence to go on and approach Ginny.

I say, gimme Hermione for a best friend any day.
