It does say in PoA, that they transformed into animagi so that they
would be safe in his company, and he wouldn't have to be alone
anymore when transforming. I can't cite the exact text and location,
but i believe it is when Lupin and Sirius are telling our trio the
story of how/why they became animagi when they're in the Shack.
