Although I grant Hermione's intelligence, this sounds like a rumor 
told on the train and not a fact.

If I was an author of a very popular book series, with legions of 
fans poring over the internet looking for all sorts of clues, I would 
purposely mislead them once in a while. I don't think taking her 
interviews as ways of determining plot directions is a very good idea.
