I've seen this one bandied about on the kids' sites. 
I'll give the same argument here that I've made there.

Crookshanks is a *boy* cat!  As far as I have seen,
there is no evidence that transfiguration also results
in a sex change.  

My personal theory on Figg/Crookshanks is that Crook
is a half-kneazle (see Fantastic Beasts and Where to
Find Them), and is *possibly* the cat that tripped
Mrs. Figg and caused her to break her ankle in the
first book.  

Just a thought.
