I think that Rowling is intentionally setting up
parallels between the generations. And Neville would
be the Pettigrew of this group. That doesn't mean
that history must repeat itself. Neville seems to be
made of tougher stuff than Pettigrew. He has already
stood up to Malfoy and Co at the Quidditch match, then
Harry and Co in the common room. Dumbledore rewarded
him for that. So Neville might be struggling with his
course work, but he shows an ability to be strong when
necessary. And that bit about his parents, how could
he darkside after that?

done a good job setting up an environment where just
about anything can happen without being too far out.
