Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald in 1945 - and some have speculated the
Grindelwald was Hitler. Look in SS/PS where Harry and Ron are on the
train to Hogwarts. Harry opens a chocolate frog with Dumbledore on the
cards, and in his description you'll see a reference to Grindelwald.
