"Who paid for the Nimbus 2000?" has bothered me, too.  However, I 
don't think your theory is right, Gretchen.  Even if James and Lily 
are around in ghost form and Dumbledore can contact them when he wants 
(which I don't think is the case), Harry has inherited their 
Gringotts' account.  I don't think the gold there would belong to them 
anymore.
