I will agree without question that Snape isn't a nice guy (though he's still my favorite character) but I have never thought of him as cowardly either - though if something in the book disputes that I will take it into consideration.  

I would think to be a spy against Voldemort however would require great courage, the consequences if caught would surely be painful as well as fatal.  He did it once before and it appears he's willing to do it again (making reference to the end of Book 4).  Just my two cents of input anyway on the topic of Snape's bravery.  And I wouldn't be surprised if there's still more to the infamous prank that we haven't heard yet.
