Excellent points.  I also attribute part of his bitterness to having his life 
likely dictated by others, first by his family, then by Voldemort, and now by 
dumbledore.

That would certainly be a twist in the books if he turned out to be a real 
bad guy.  Certainly hope it doesn't happen -- but anythings possible.
