I think the belching-up slugs etc. was due to the fact that the wand 
was broken and not working properly, and not because it 
didn't "belong" to Ron (at least in CoS, can't think of any incidents 
offhand in the first book).

My understanding is that you can use another person's wand, but you 
might not do it with as great of finesse, ease, or whatever you 
choose to call it.  It's a little like driving another person's car 
(imperfect analogy, but it's the best I can come up with): you 
probably won't crash it into a tree or anything, but it will probably 
feel a bit awkward.
Speaking of which, given the events at the climax of GoF, think LV 
will ditch his current wand for something more, er, potentially 
effective?
