This is my first post.  I hope what I'm saying is not obvious.

We know that Professor Snape is a spy against the Dark side for our side.  I think it's possible that Professor Snape makes it publicly known that Draco is "his favorite student" for the purpose of ingratiating himself with Draco's father, whom we know is a Death Eater.
