James - an orphan? (short)

That seems probable. In GoF (UK hardback) p. 152 Fudge says "Not many 
people are aware that the Potters knew you-know-who was after them."
 
Since we know that Voldemort didn't seem too obsessed with killing 
Lily until she got between him and Harry, I've always assumed that 
Voldemort was after *all* the Potters.

Especially since Harry now has no living relatives except the 
Dursleys.
