How many students at Hogwarts?

According to you, how many students are there in the school?
Hundreds of horseless carriages are waiting to take the students at 
Hogsmeade station, hundreds of pupils attend the Quidditch games, 
that seems at lot, doesn't it?
But actually, if you consider Gryffindor's house: 8 pupils (3 girls 
and 5 boys joined Gryffindor in Harry's year. Let's make it an 
average of 10 students per house per year. There are four houses and 
7 years at Hogwarts...which makes a total of around 300 pupils in the 
whole school, no more!
And actually, it seems to explain the fact that they all fit around 
the four (already very large) tables in the dining-hall.
