Another possible key event in CoS could be:

Harry saves Ginny Weasley's life thereby creating a wizard's bond and 
life debt between the two of them in the same way that a bond was 
created with Peter Pettigrew when Harry spared him. 

It would seem more likely to me to be something like this rather than 
a popularly supposed romance between these two characters during the 
period of cannon.
