Unless I'm mistake, once you receive it, you have seconds to open it,
and the longer you wait the worst it gets. At one point (sorry don't
have a reference) Neville gets a Howler and does try to run for it. He
makes it to the hallway out side the Great Hall before it explodes
(literally) and his grandmother's voice, louder than ever, is still
heard by all the students.
