JkR has been quoted as saying that Crookshanks is part-Kneazle. 

A Kneazle is named and described in the schoolbook she released almost two years ago - Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and you can learn more in the Beastiary at Steve's famous Lexicon - http://www.i2k.net/svanderark/lexicon(hope I got that right - working from memory here).
