I've discussed this extensively with a number of people, and we
came up with another possibility: that even if, say, Sirius knew where the
Potters had been living, after the Fidelius Charm was cast, he wouldn't be
able to see them. He'd walk right by the house, or perhaps even look
inside and simply not be able to see them, not unless Peter told him they
were there. Something like setting up one of Douglas Adams' "Somebody
Else' Problem" fields on the Potters themselves. This would remain in
effect until the Secret Keeper revealed their location, in which case the
Fidelius Charm is completely broken, which would explain how Sirius and
Hagrid knew to get there. Not sure how accurate this is, but it seemed
possible.
