It also says in GoF (UK paperback, ch.1, page 9) "... Frank was stubbornly repeating again and again, that he was innocent, and that the only person he had seen near the house on the day of the Riddles' deaths had been a teenage boy, a stranger, dark-haired and pale." So I believe that to be Tom Riddle, and he cast AK to kill his family.  I agree with Barb on the no-basilisk theory.
