I know that JKR has made a point that our choices define us, not what we
inherit, BUT...
I didn't inherit my father's skills, yet I have chosen to follow his
footsteps and do what he does for a living as well. Perhaps if Neville's
mother was a herbologist, there would be books and plants around the house
so he would be familiar with these things. And who's to say that his
grandmother wasn't there to help him learn these things as he grew up?
Also, do we know approximately how old his grandmother is? If we could
determine this, then we would have a good idea of his parents age.
