Fortunately for JKR, the magical nature of Hogwarts' plan covers up a 
multitude of inconsistencies.  Maybe the stairs have all moved in 
such a way that that night, everyone has to go up before they can get 
into the dungeons.  And a bathroom that's sometimes on one floor, 
sometimes on another is a cinch to explain away.
