Why bother to have a sword?! (Re: Swords: Broad or Dainty)

Veronica replies:

Yes, for fighting, a wand would be much better. However, I can't 
imagine that GG actually fought much with a sword described as so 
ornate (rubies the size of eggs, was it?). Perhaps it was only used 
for ceremonial purposes. Perhaps wizards even have something like the 
knighthood in the old movies where the king touches the knight on 
each soldier with the flat of the blade.
