In SS (and perhaps in the other novels as well, but I loaned them to a friend to
read and so can't check right now), it is clear that after the end of final
exams, the students stay at Hogwarts for a week before they head home for
the summer:
"Their very last exam was History of Magiuc. One hour of answering questions
about batty old wizards who'd invented self-stirring cauldrons and they'd be
free, free for a whole wonderful week until their exam resuts came out."
[SS16]
Two questions:
1. Is one hour long enough for a final exam? Perhaps the British model is
different from the American one, but in my experience, finals tend to last a
bit longer, from 1.5 to 3 hours at least.
2. What exactly do the students do on campus between the end of finals and
their departure from school? I teach at an American boarding school, and once
students finish finals at the end of the year, they leave campus right away --
mostly to prevent excessive end-of-year mischief. Once again, perhaps British
schools have a different policy.
Thanks,
Dave
