I think that Lupin is more afraid of the *sight* of the moon, not the moon 
itself. And when the moon is slowly getting bigger over time, and knowing 
full well what it will bring. That's why the boggart changed into an image 
of the moon, not the moon itself. And as HOLLYDAZE or bboy_mn said (Sorry, I 
can't remember which one said it!) you can't be harmed by an image. (Well, 
not physically anyways) Just my thoughts.
