I've been thinking about this too.

It's funny we don't know the type of wood/ core for many wizards 
wands only the select few. And out of the few that we do know the 
ONLY two to have the same type of wood are Lily and Ron (does this 
add strength to the Lily related to the Weasleys scenario - I don't 
know?).

Also another thing about Harry's wand's wood Holly - holly is an 
evergreen tree - in fact I believe (might not be right about this) 
that it is the only wand made out of an evergreen tree mentioned.

Also yew - don't know how much credit there is to this but there's an 
old saying that is a yew tree is chopped down/ falls down/ dies 
another yew tree always regrows in its place. and Voldemort 
was 'chopped down' and then 'regrowed' out of the cauldron (GOF).

Don't know much about mahogany apart from the fact that its quite a 
dark wood.
