Well, yes, I suppose that could possibly be true, but what I meant by that statement was that Pettigrew didn't overhear the rumor 12 years ago, in time to warn v'mort.  Someone else, pressumably a spy working within the upper levels of the ministry would have been in a better position to pass on info than Pettigrew.  Pettigrew was not the most powerful wizard in the world, so I really cannot see him as being in the know about ministry business.  He may have heard this from the Potters, but I don't really think so.  I am more inclined to think that either the info accidently leaked out (in which case pettigrew could have been the one to tell v'mort), or there is a spy we don't know about yet.  Sorry about any confusion.
