Not only that, but he's just been framed by the last person who was
supposed to have the wit and power to do so. The irony probably was
a bit much for his unbalanced emotional state.

I don't know, I have to disagree with you on that one. Sirius
doesn't seem to think very clearly when he's angry--and he had to
have been VERY angry at that point. I think he'd have been perfectly
happy to off Peter right then and there.
