Hey Catlady!

Yes, the "Severus Snape"/"Perseus Evans" conundrum is
quite thought-provoking.

Have there been previous posts on this topic? If so,
I'd be most interested in reading them.

It's a bit of a stretch to track Snape back to Lily
and Petunia -- and I've yet to workout the logistics
of that particular theory. Still,
Snape-as-Lily's-brother is the most convincing
argument I've yet to stumble upon to explain Snape's
intense, burning hatred of James, Lupin, and Black.
Perhaps, their (assumed) closeness with Lily, sparked
some kind of jealousy or protectiveness in him. I'm
shooting in the dark, here, but that's my very rough
hunch.

The entire "joke" scenario alone just doesn't cut it
for me as a strong enough excuse -- besides, the
Rowling seems to indicate that he disliked the
Marauders long before that incident. Something quite
antagonistic about Snape's attitude and/or behavior
must have prompted Sirius to perpetrate such a
possibly deadly gag.

It also doesn't make sense that Snape might have
changed his name AFTER his stint with the DEs. For one
thing, he's referred to as "Snape" in the Penseive
trial in GoF and Sirius clearly reacts to the name
"Snape" in PoA. Had Snape not been going by that name,
Sirius, who was in Azkaban before the DE
infrastructure formally fell apart, wouldn't have such
a clear mental association with it. No, I think Snape
either changed it before coming to Hogwarts (perhaps
ashamed of his family) or was born into the Evans
family, but for some reason or another, was raised by
the Snapes.

Still, it's a sticky wicket.
