I know!  How dare they?

Because he's an inexplicably powerful wizard, a legend from age 15 
months.  His defeat(s) of Voldemort might make one assume he'd be the 
last person to open the Chamber, but it does suggest him as the only 
rival to Voldemort most students can imagine (other than Dumbledore, 
of course).  Once his ability to speak Parseltongue is known, it's 
easy to recast his mysterious background as a dangerous rather than a 
good thing.  See Ernie's ingenious argument in chapter 11.

Even those who believe all dark wizards come from Slytherin are 
probably open to discovering a new threat lurking in Gryffindor--
unless, of course, they're Gryffindors.
