I was under the impression that all of James' family was dead.

Otherwise Harry would have had relatives to go to other than the Dursleys.

Or if the Dursleys were the safest option, the relatives would have been at 
least consulted; and Harry would have found out about them once he was 
re-introduced to the wizarding world.
