Sirius And The Death Eaters

In PoA, Fudge says that it came out that Sirius was Voldie's right 
hand man. Obviously he wasn't but with this rumour, wouldn't the 
Death Eaters be a bit confused as to who this guy is, who is claimed 
to be Voldie's right hand man who they don't even know about? They 
wouldn't want to save Wormtail's skin, so wouldn't it float around 
that Sirius actually is innocent
