It is more than that.
It is repeatedly emphasised that Lily did /not/ have to die,
both by the memories awakened by the Dementors in PoA, and
when Harry meets Voldemort.

It is also a necessity for the protection Harry enjoys. It
is fuelled by his mother dying because she protected him -
by her sacrificing herself. If Voldemort were going to kill
her anyway, there would be no sacrifice, and she would be
dying because he had decided so - that would have rendered
the protection inoperable.
