No, but there is a law that requires children to get an education,
whether it is in school,a tutor or homeschool.Granted not everyone
obeys it...but if you are caught..there can be serious consequences.

True, but someone has to teach you to read before you can study on
your own. That is not an easy thing to do.I have seen parents try to
homeschool with disasterous results.Once you learn the basics from
a qualified person/people you can do better. I agree that if you have
the self discipline to make yourself study...like Hermione...I think
you can learn more. But how many children have that self discipline?
