Whether he was gamekeeper or not doesn't change the fact that he was
there and actively working even if only as an apprentice.

No matter how low a profile he kept, Hagrid and the students are
trapped on Hogwarts ground 10 straight months out of the year. I find
it impossible to believe that the students didn't notice a 9 or 10
foot tall man wandering around the grounds. Even if Hagrid avoided
associating with the students, the students who did know him would
pass his identity down to the newly arrived students. As curious as
kids are I find it impossible for anyone going to school there to not
know Hagrid was there and to know his name.
Again, when he became gamekeep is irrelevant, he was there, and
extremely hard not to notice.
Just a thought.
