OK. Granted, Snape has shown heartlessness and coldness, but his attitude in 
this situation is based on knowing that Hermione is part of the 'rule 
breaking' trio. His own house student Draco was respsonsible......  If you 
look back to COS you see McGonagal treat Harry and Ron with the same leniency.

It is a matter of perspective.....
