I always thought that Hermione might've gotten a chance to face the 
boggart (even though she did ask the question) except that she was 
standing behind Harry. Maybe Lupin hoped to finish the boggart off 
before they got that far down the line, but since it rolled over in 
front of Harry he (thought he) had to intervene.
I never got that he intended to punish Hermione at all. He tends to 
focus on positive things, and to subtly teach his students right from 
wrong in so doing.
That is why he is one of my favorite characters. Because despite all 
he's suffered, he hasn't turned bitter, and he doesn't lash out at 
the world around him. He's the kind of person I would want to teach 
my children (if I had any)
