The Gryffindors in Harry's year that we have heard of are Harry, Ron, 
Hermione, Neville, Dean, Seamus, Parvati Patil and Lavender Brown 
(interesting name, by the way, Lavender Brown.) That is eight. So at 
most there are 12 Slytherins in his year. That's not very many names 
to learn. Even if he never talked to them he would at least know 
their names. My high school class had 500 people in it. I didnt know 
them all, but i knew their names.
