It hasn't been stated that LV went after Harry on Wormtail's say so. The books say 
thatthev Potters knew LV was after them and that Dumbledore suggested the best 
way to hideout would be with the Fidelius curse. Upon being named Secret-Keeper for 
the Potters, Wormtail revealed their whereabouts to LV. Voldemort may very well have 
decided to go after the Potters of his accord since he was looking for them prior to 
their going into hiding.
