Actually, we find out in OoTP that most of his family had "star" 
names, but I always thought it rather delicious that a black dog 
animagus has the name of the Dog Star and the surname "Black". I am 
pretty sure this is deliberate, like many of the other names, such as 
Remus (as in Romulus's brother)Lupin ("wolf-like"). JKR has fun in a 
Dickens-like way with names. It's great, too - gets child readers to 
go look it up, I hope, and learn something new. (I'm a 
teacher-librarian and love being there to help them when they do!)
