One reason I haven't bought into the Evil Lupin theories is JKR 
stating that Lupin is one of her favorite characters. My feeling is 
that when she says this she means she likes Lupin for who he is not 
because he's fun to write like nasty characters can be. (i.e Snape) 
I can't imagine JKR thinking so highly of a traitor especially when 
those he betrayed were some of the few people who accepted him for 
who he is.
